_TKcstlZ-w4

The San Francisco Free Folk Festival was founded in 1977. The annual, two-day event, includes music and dance workshops, concerts, dance parties, crafts, vendors, and formal and informal music-making

San Francisco Free Folk Festival

The Free Folk Festival needed to promote classes and performances, recruit performers, and to raise funding for the annual Free Folk Festival, one of the key events in the Bay Area folk music circuit.

The festival took place inside linoleum and concrete public school classrooms and gymnasiums, a challenging lighting and sound environment. We were asked to produce the min-documentary at the last minute.

The piece was shot “guerrilla style” without lights and without a script. All sound and music on the video were recorded live on location. We created the story in post production. The video was used extensively to promoting future Free Folk Festivals.

Flying Moose was hired to design, script, shoot and delivering five short documentary videos to introduce the honorees at the live event.

The challenge was to introduce each of the five award recipients, highlighting their professional achievements, establishing the critical role that the Conservatory played in the development of their own craft, their organization or in American theater, and to encourage generous financial support from the audience attending the Awards luncheon.

We worked closely with A.C.T., researching the background of the honorees and formulating interview questions to elicit the responses we needed top support the MFA program. We captured twenty-four interviews, shooting in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The video featured here is for the Edward Hastings Career Achievement Award, given to the four-time Academy Award–nominated actress, Annette Bening.

The five documentary videos were enthusiastically received and added critical support to the story of the Conservatory and its mission. At the event, hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised in support of the A.C.T. actor training program.

Rudolph and Sletten

Building Information Modeling merges a diverse set of digital data to create an evolving, parametric model of a building project, helping to reduce costs, streamline project delivery, and increase communication among team members. Rudolph and Sletten needed a corporate marketing video to explain and promote Building Information Modeling (BIM) to potential clients and collaborators.

Building information modeling is a vaguely defined set of software tools and techniques. We were tasked with developing and writing a clear introduction to BIM, drawing on a multitude of new and archival video and animation.

The Moose directed Rudolph and Sletten’s partner, View By View, in the production of animated graphics and 3D stills for the video. Aerial photos, time-lapse photography and candid interviews with key owners, architects, subcontractors, and company directors were also used to clearly explain BIM and its successful application to large building projects.

Rudolph and Sletten is dedicated to using BIM technologies to maintain their position as a leading, innovative contractor.  Our video effectively communicates to both first-time clients and to industry specialists, and helps Rudolph and Sletten remain competitive in the construction industry.

RSS Architecture is a rare architectural firm: the company’s architect/designers are also highly skilled wood and metal workers. Their detailed understanding of how detailed architectural elements are manufactured gives the them a deep insight into designing them.

RSS Architecture / Modesto Architecture Festival

Flying Moose Pictures collaborated with RSS Architecture to design and produce a marketing video to highlight the unique design and manufacturing skills at the company.

Demolition, construction, and hand carving of wooden architectural details all take time. Our challenge was to present these painstaking processes, as well as the philosophy behind them, in a short marketing video.

Flying Moose had the opportunity to shoot the RSS Architecture team at work on the remodeling of a nondescript suburban house into a sophisticated craftsman style home.

We made extensive use of time-lapse videography to engage the viewer and communicate an overview of the transformation.

Location footage was combined with the time-lapse video, interviews, and still photography to produce a story that highlighted RSS’s hands-on approach and commitment to the blend of design and craft.

The documentary was completed for the Modesto Architectural Film Festival and is used by RSS to promote their unique skills and services.

He has created hundreds of hours of video training tutorials for industry leaders lynda.com and Total Training. Deke has written over 80 books, translated into 24 languages, with more than 4 million copies in print.

Deke McClelland

Adobe Photoshop and Creative Suite guru Deke McClelland wanted to expand his software training empire and produce an ongoing series of informative and promotional podcasts. We partnered with Deke to come up with an edgy, fast paced, musical concept.

Our challenge for the pilot podcast was to fit 100 Photoshop tips into a 5-minute rap, shot at gritty industrial locations around San Francisco.

We closely integrated motion graphics with Deke’s performance in this riotously elaborate video, which set the tone for the first dekePod series. Flying Moose produced the dekPod series twice-monthly for two-years and was enjoyed by millions of viewers.

He has created hundreds of hours of video training tutorials for industry leaders lynda.com and Total Training. Deke has written over 80 books, translated into 24 languages, with more than 4 million copies in print.

Deke McClelland

Deke wanted to produce a twice-monthly video podcast to market his training books and videos to potential students. He planned to lure them to his website through twice-monthly, short, humorous video podcasts.

Most training videos are sleep inducing, consisting of slow moving screen captures and dull, off-screen narration. Our challenge was to design a format that would engage potential students and drive them to Deke’s website by offering them a video that both entertained and demystified PhotoShop techniques in a graphic and compelling way.

Our solution was to turn the camera on Deke and away from dull screen captures. Each episode of dekPod begins with a rant by the author, who puts the educational material in context using a rapid-fire ranting monologue juxtaposed with ironic images.

Scripts were developed with deke through Skype story sessions. Deke’s performance was directed for a clear, truthful delivery, then sped up in post to enhance his manic rants against “the man”.

When it was necessary to show a screenshot, we used heavily edited screen captures that zoomed in close to show detail and zoomed out to illustrate context. Only essential actions were shown on screen. The interface was condensed by cutting and pasting when necessary to show widely separated elements on a single screen.

Flying Moose produced the dekePod series twice-monthly for two-years and it was enjoyed by millions of viewers.

Dr. Susie Wee: Women In Tech Int’l Hall of Fame Induction Video

Edelman is the world’s largest public relations firm, with 67 offices and more than 4,800 employees worldwide, as well as affiliates in more than 30 cities. The San Francisco office supports many Bay Area and Silicon Valley technology companies, including Hewlett-Packard.

Edelman

Women in Technology International is the premiere global organization empowering women in business and technology. Each year, WITI inducts a handful of women technologists into its Hall of Fame. In 2010, they selected Susie Wee, the CTO of Client Cloud Services at Hewlett-Packard, for the honor.

Hewlett-Packard partnered with Edelman, the global PR agency, and Flying Moose Pictures, to design and produce a profile of Dr. Wee for the annual WITI conference and website.

Our challenge was to capture the elements of Dr. Wee’s background, education, and personality that make her an outstanding leader, and specifically, how she thrives as a manager in a technical field dominated by men.

We interviewed Dr. Wee at the Hewlett-Packard campus and laboratories, focusing on the leadership skills that allow her to manage large groups of diverse designers and engineers to develop breakthrough technologies. Archival still images and video were used to visually support the story of her personal development and how that shaped her management skills.

Our documentary profile of Dr. Wee set the stage for her to receive a warm welcome at her induction into the WITI Hall of Fame.

FP3 Network Processor Product Launch

cnMhTlpEFHs

Alcatel-Lucent is a global innovator in IP and cloud networking and ultra-broadband access.

Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent needed to launch the FlexPath 3, the world’s first 400GB network processor. Our task was to design a short video to communicate that the company’s commitment to producing their own custom silicon chip resulted in a device that was faster, smarter, and greener than the competition.

We developed an interview strategy and conversed with core members of the Alcatel-Lucent engineering team, capturing key messages about the breakthrough device, and focusing the video on the differentiators that separate FP3 technology from Alcatel-Lucent’s competitors.

Basil Alwan, President of the IP division, was placed in front of a green landscape to visually communicate the “green” component of the marketing video – a fifty-percent power savings inherent in the new processor design.

We captured compelling, engaging interviews from our engineer interviewees.. The product launch was a great success. We continue to partner with Alcatel-Lucent, promote their lead edge technology, and assist them in gaining market share.

Fresh Choice: Service Training Video

Fresh Choice is a chain of restaurants focused on high-quality food and excellent customer service.

Fresh Choice

Fresh Choice asked Flying Moose to write, design, and produce a training video to teach company policies and customer service to their multi-lingual entry-level workforce.

Fresh Choice trains hundreds of employees each year to deliver the excellent customer service that is a core value to their customers. They needed to train employees for three key positions at their restaurants, focusing on empowering them to “do the right thing” for their guests.

Flying Moose expanded on our experience producing an entertaining sales team video for restaurant giant Chevys Fresh Mex. We created an innovative script with humorous characters and a distinctive visual style. We shot on location at a Fresh Choice restaurant during regular business hours, requiring careful choreography to avoid impacting food service.

The resulting training video was engaging and informative and continues to support improved employee service.

Live Painting Performance: Wax on Glass

bfWtachJDLo

Originally from Washington, DC, Charlie co-founded the Chicago-based visual theater company Local Infinities, creating 11 materials-based visual performances over 7 years, featuring 800 lbs of dirt, 100 gallons of water, or dipping people in giant vats of wax. Local Infinities performed at Oerel international theater festival in the Netherlands and Kyiv Travnevy in Ukraine, and curated international performance series at Links Hall in Chicago.

Charlie levin

Charlie Levin makes performances, interactive paintings, and installations exploring questions of complexity, identity, and perception. Her innovative interactive wax paintings use transparency, light, and sensors to create body-art experiences bridging digital and analog experience.

Charlie was invited to perform at the San Francisco Arts Festival and ask Flying Moose Pictures to design and produce a marketing video.

In this unique and intimate performance, a painting comes to life in response to a text read aloud by the audience. Starting with a large, clear piece of glass, Levin uses melted wax to create illuminated images that change with the direction and intensity of light. Flying Moose had to design a plan to capture the kinetic painting process within tight time constraints as the wax was heated, applied, and cooled into a solid painting.

Charlie used our marketing video to attract a sold out crowd to her performances at the San Francisco Arts Festival. We captured that performance as well and produced video documentation that she will use for grant application and for her web site.

Love Sick Promo

r3w3T-1WuKI

Based on the ancient Hebrew text, “The Song of Songs” Love Sick fuses a live concert experience with story and character to create one woman’s journey through a relentless and fervent love affair—and her gradual descent into madness. Set against a backdrop of modern-day Tel-Aviv, and a Jerusalem unbound by time, the production features Ofra Daniel and celebrated world-musician Ali Paris.

http://lovesickmusical.com/

We previewed the show in advance of our shoot and discovered that the staging of the musical was complex. The small stage was a deep thrust, meaning that audience (and cameras) would appear in many shots. Characters danced in tight circles, musicians and actors performed high above the stage on a scaffold and walked into and behind the audience. Lighting changed radically from scenes to scenes. We designed a detailed plan for our coverage using 4 cameras.

The world premiere performance of Love Sick won glowing reviews, including the San Francisco Chronicles Highest Rating. We produced several edits of our performance documentation video; a short sizzle reel, a 5-minute trailer, and a 2 hour cut of the full show. The production company is using the videos to promote the show and schedule future productions.

Malcolm Drilling Marketing Video

xaC_Et8HAmk

Malcolm Drilling Company is a preeminent specialty foundation contractor serving a global market.

Malcolm Drilling

Malcolm Drilling needed a fast way to differentiate its specialty Foundation business when presenting to prospective clients.  They asked Flying Moose to produce a corporate marketing video that would introduce the wide variety of services they offer, the expertise of their employees, and their vast inventory of leading edge technology and equipment.

Many of Malcolm’s prospective customers treat the specialty foundation business as a commodity, ignoring the value of design engineering expertise and experience. Malcolm needed to communicate the value of their design engineering skills that differentiate them from their competition.

Script development focused on profiling the company’s competencies, their high profile, signature construction projects, and challenging prospective customer’s preconceived notions of the company.

Malcolm Drilling began using the video in presentations even before it was completed. The corporate marketing video has become an essential tool in their proposal process.

Rachel Garlin Music Video

T3AIRmoCMAY

Based in San Francisco, Rachel Garlin is a singer-songwriter whose character-filled songs have been noted for their vivid, lyrical imagery and themes that are “fresh and often unexpectedly moving” (East Bay Express). Her April 2015 release, Wink at July, continues in the folk-rock storytelling vein that brought her past accolades from the New York Songwriter’s Circle, Performing Songwriter Magazine, and won her first place in the Newport Folk Festival’s Talent Search.

Wink at July is a collection of 12 new songs (from acoustic solos to full band arrangements) with varied settings: the isles of Scotland, the subways of New York, the hills of the Bay Area. Garlin recorded the album in San Francisco with producer JJ Wiesler (Matt Nathanson, Girls) and musicians Michael Urbano (John Hiatt, Smash Mouth), Prairie Prince (Journey, The Tubes) and many others including Garlin’s friends and longtime collaborators Green, Kate Isenberg, Jon Evans, and Julie Wolf.

The lively lead-off track “Gwendolyn Said” stems from a childhood memory of riding the public bus to school while reading the poetry-rich bus billboards overhead, including a piece by poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks with the words: “Exhaust the little moment, soon it dies.” In the spirit of those same words, Garlin has created an album that is real, in the moment, and dancing with imagery. In it, there are stories inspired by friends and family members, painters and public figures, landscapes and loss.

Rachel Garlin

Flying Moose Pictures was asked to design and produce a music video for the release of Rachel’s new album, Wink at July.

From the Berkeley Hills to the Isles of Scotland, from Keith Haring’s graffiti to the studio of an elusive artist, from the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks to letters and words exchanged between friends and loved ones, Rachel Garlin guides her listeners on a winding road of language, images, and the creative process in her latest album, Wink at July. Tonal ballads and bandy melodies provide a seamless interplay of storytelling and music that encourage listeners to reminisce, celebrate and take solace while navigating our shared human existence. For all its descriptive strength, the 12-song album might be compared to a cherished book of vignettes, except that there is a poetic element, something beautiful and evocative that infuses each song with lyrical as well as narrative power.

Our goal was to produce a music video that presented Rachel’s performance without getting in the way of her music in the small venue packed with her avid fans. We designed a product that used only two cameras and careful, conservative editing to let viewers experience the song and lyrics. Our music video was shot at Viracocha, an eclectic antique shop and performance venue in the Mission.

Rachel is using the music video produced by Flying Moose Pictures to promote her new album.

Theatre Bay Area was founded in 1976 to serve the vital artistic community of the Bay Area, and is today the largest regional theatre service organization in North America.

For nearly a decade, Flying Moose has documented the annual Theatre Bay Area General Auditions. For two days, more than 200 actors present monologues to a large audience of casting directors, directors, and producers. Flying Moose produces short video clips that actors use to promote their careers.

Theatre Bay Area

For more than two decades, the Theatre Bay Area General Auditions have provided an opportunity for newcomers and veteran actors alike to showcase their talent for two-hundred local directors, casting directors and representatives of theatres seeking to cast their show.

Our challenge was to capture each performance, anticipating the movement of the actors across the stage and framing to best present their work. A new actor appeared on stage every two minutes.

For more than a decade, our audition videos have been used to cast hundreds of actors in roles for film and live performance.

Terry Riley’s Sun Rings

For 40 years, the Kronos Quartet has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience.

Kronos Quartet

The Kronos Quartet returned to the San Francisco Jazz Festival for the Bay Area premiere of Sun Rings, a major new work by famed composer Terry Riley. Co-commissioned by NASA, SFJAZZ, and others, this evening-length program unites the artistry of Kronos and Riley with the wonders of technology, bringing the music of the spheres to life for the new millennium.

Union rules allowed only for a single camera operator to document the performance.

Flying Moose documented the event with an economical single camera shoot.

Titus Andronicus

Founded in 1974, Cal Shakes is an award-winning, nationally recognized regional theater. Through seasonal productions at their outdoor amphitheater, and in year-round school and community-based programs, Cal Shakes expands access to the arts and builds diverse ownership of our region’s cultural vitality by fostering participatory approaches to the artistic process and arts education.

Flying Moose has documented live performances for Cal Shakes, producing B-roll for broadcast, and marketing video and trailers for their website.

California Shakespeare Theater

Titus Andronicus is a graphically violent tragedy by William Shakespeare. California Shakespeare Theater needed to promote its first production of the play in its 38-year history.

The Cal Shakes audience was predisposed to dislike the play, due to its reputation for gruesome, violent scenes of rape, mutilation, and murder. Flying Moose Pictures was asked to capture the performance and produce a short, dramatic trailer to promote the performance.

The driving force behind our trailer design was the highly dramatic music we recorded during the performance. Loud bass and drums set the tone for an evening of heightened political and physical conflict. We selected the most dynamic B-roll to accompany the musical score.

The trailer helped overcome the reputation of Shakespeare’s “bloodiest work” and attracted sold out audiences to the show.

Tony Award Gala Fundraising Video

The Magic is a nationally acclaimed, award-winning theatre dedicated to the development and production of new plays.

Magic Theatre

Flying Moose was asked to conceive, write and produce a video parody for the Magic’s Gala Fundraising Benefit set on the night of the Tony Awards.

To entertain a large crowd of current and potential supporters of the theater company with a humorous parody video.

We wrote a parody of the Tony Awards, founded on the conceit that members of the local, San Francisco theater community were harboring a desperate and deluded hope of receiving an award.

We staged and shot “live red carpet” interviews before the celebration, then seamlessly edited additional shots of the event itself into the presentation. The video was a highlight of the evening of entertainment and fundraising at the Presidio Officer’s Club.

New Logic is the leading provider of high-performance membrane filtration systems used in a wide variety of applications for pure water and wastewater treatment, industrial and chemical processing, power, pulp and paper, oil and gas production and processing, paint and pigments and electronics industries.

New Logic Research

New Logic Research asked Flying Moose to design and produce an extensive series of training videos for their VSEP Pilot Testing Program.

New Logic Research’s proprietary technology demands a multi-stage design process. The company required their global base of potential customers to travel to California, sit through a week of classroom demonstrations, and study two 300-page user manuals, making the sales process complex and support-intensive.

Flying Moose developed a script for a training video, working intensively with New Logic and testing the script with novice users. We shot the video in a three day, multi-camera production.

The new video training “manual” is far more accessible and popular than the old printed version, has improved customer support and streamlined the sales process.

YBCA Season Promo

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is a high-profile Bay Area arts organization devoted to contemporary visual art, performance, and film/video representing diverse cultural and artistic perspectives.

YBCA (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts)

YBCA needed a marketing video to promote the visual and performing artists in their upcoming season. The video was to premiere at a fundraising gala and then on their website.

YBCA gave Flying Moose the huge creative challenge of designing a video promotion for their upcoming performing arts season, based on over 60 hours of archival video, hundreds of still images, and 3 “Big Ideas” — “Inside / Outside”, “Ritual and Redemption”, and “Imagining Our Future”

We developed a concept for the piece, using dramatic editing and time shifting to organize the multitude of source videos along the “Big Idea” conceptual framework.

Our sound designers at Potrero Post devised a 5.1 surround soundtrack to underscore the moving images.

The video made its premiere at YBCA’s live gala, and was so successful that YBCA repurposed our animated graphic – “Art + You = Life” for their print and web campaign.
